Are you 21–25 and ready for a life-changing experience?

AIYEP is a fully funded exchange program connecting young Australians and Indonesians for 15 unforgettable weeks of cultural learning, work experience, and meaningful connections.

Note: This application is only open to Australian citizens and permanent residents.

AIYEP 2025 Application & Program Timeline

1. Apply Online

Applications are open now and close at 11:59 pm on 30 June 2025.
Submit your application online.

2. Interviews

July 2025

Shortlisted applicants will be notified by email and invited to an interview with a panel from DFAT, the Australia-Indonesia Institute, and Value Learning.

3. Placement Offers

End of July 2025

Successful applicants will receive an official offer by email.
If you’re not selected this year, we strongly encourage you to try again—AIYEP values diverse voices.

4. Program Schedule

September to December 2025

((embrer ✔ Online Program: 4 September – 9 October 2025.
Approx. 25 hours total (4–6 hrs/week)
Includes the AFS Global Competence Certificate

Indonesian Participants in Australia: 18 October – 23 November 2025.

Homestay experience & cultural exchange (Indonesian delegates)

Work Placements (Melbourne): 27 October – 14 November 2025 (Indonesian delegates)

All Participants in Australia Together: 19 – 23 November 2025. (Australians come to Melbourne on the 18 November.)

Wrap-up & pre-departure activities

Indonesia Experience: 23 November – 29 December 2025.

Engage in cultural, professional, and community activities.

5. You’re On Your Way!

The program ends with a post-program debrief in early 2026.

Time Commitment

  • Online Program:  4–6 hours/week (flexible and self-paced with live sessions) And 2 live online sessions a week Tuesday and Thursday evenings) 5 weeks.

     

  • In-Country Experience: Full-time for 5 weeks, including homestay, work placement, and social activities

FAQS

Am I eligible?

If you are 21-25 years of age, an Australian citizen or permanent resident, hold an interest in Indonesian culture or language, are eager to expand your knowledge, and wish to contribute to the strengthening of Australia’s relationship with its nearest neighbour, then AIYEP is the program for you.

Is AIYEP for students?

Applicants from all areas of Australian society are encouraged to apply; including young professionals, teachers, university or TAFE students and graduates.This program is about representing Australia, as well as offering cultural and personal development experiences to Australian participants.

Do I need Indonesian language skills?

While recommended, Indonesian language skills are not a prerequisite for selection to this program.However, we expect applicants to show a strong aptitude to learn and a commitment to understand the basics of the Indonesian language before the program starts.

Who will I connect with on the program?

During the program you will connect with other participants, government and business leaders who play important roles in Australia-Indonesian relationships. Throughout the program you will be supported by a program coordinator.

What do I need to include in my application?

You will need your CV, 2 letters of recommendation, and to answer some questions about your ability to participate in the program. You need to demonstrate why you are interested in the program and how it will benefit your future.

Can I work/study during the program?

The online component is flexible and self-paced, requiring around 4 to 6 hours per week and scheduled outside typical 9 to 5 hours, so yes, it’s possible to balance with work or study during this phase. However, you’ll need to take leave from work or study to attend the in-person pre-departure sessions in Australia and for the full in-country program in Indonesia.

Do I need to pay for the program?

AIYEP awards outstanding young Australians with full scholarships to participate. In return, participants are expected to represent Australia to their best ability and engage fully in all aspects of the program. Please note that items of a personal nature while in Indonesia will be at your own expense.

How much time do I need to dedicate to the program?

Participants will be expected to allocate approximately 4 hours a week to the online program including facilitated sessions. The in-country program is for 5 weeks, including living with a host family, a work experience placement, and social activities.

How many applicants are selected?

21 Australian participants will be selected for AIYEP 2025. There will be equal representation of male and female applicants. 21 participants will also be chosen from Indonesia.
